'The key to the band's allure is not only the adroit way they fuse delicate filigrees of melody with taut, muscular grooves, but also how they create absorbing soundscapes contrasting moods and emotions.'

'By turns playful and melodic, The Gentle War is involving. The simplicity of a trio means that, in jazz, as here, the listener can follow the interplay of the different parts as distinct ideas without it merging into one sound. There’s a mind-enhancing pleasure in following the players as they interact and a clarity of sound.'

Trichotomy in MOJO Magazine

Though broadly in the rock-aware, Post-E.S.T. Piano trio tradition exemplified by the likes of The Bad Plus or the Neil Cowley Trio, the Australian outfit Trichotomy have a gentility and commitment to nuance that sets them slightly apart. Though not averse to voguish, attention grabbing dynamic extremism (distortion, heavy rock beats' angry giant noises at the bottom of the Piano' naughty fairy effects at the top)' there's a winning sense of restraint about their work, even as they bamboozle with tricky time-signatures and intricate themes. Sean Foran (Plano), Pat Marchisella {bass) and John Parker (drums) sketch out delightfully detailed ensembles, full of wit and vigour. But it's their quieter moments that linger. The nine-minute rumination Blues for the Space has the serenity of an impressionist lullaby while Not According To Plan limps, hovers and thunders amid a haunting scattering electro decoration.
