Since Forever in Pittsburg Tribune

01 February 2010
Pittsburg Tribune
Bob Karlovitz

Pianist Fred Simon is the name on the cover of "Since Forever," but woodwind player Paul McCandless makes the album what it is: a highly individual blend of mellow jazz and thoughtful music with classical discipline. McCandless, an Indiana County native, was a founder of the group Oregon and a leading member of the Paul Winter Consort, two groups that promoted loving the earth and understanding it as much as they did good music. That comes across here, too, in such lovely pieces such as "Song of the Sea," "No War Nowhere" and "Simple Psalm." The quartet that also features bassist Steve Rodby, once of the Pat Metheny Group, and drummer Mark Walker, offers a slightly jazzier feeling on the title track and its version of "In a Silent Way," but always stays within its sound. It is a beautiful, calming album with a great deal of depth.
