Charlie Haden's Private Collection Northern Echo Review

21 November 2007
Northern Echo
Peter Bevan

This double CD celebrates the bass player's 70th birthday with two live sets by his Quartet West. Disc 1 actually comes from his 50th birthday concert in Santa Monica with Ernie Watts, Alan Broadbent and Billy Higgin, and disc 2 was recorded a year later in St Louis with Paul Motian replacing Higgins. All the players are in top form with Alan Broadbent outstanding on piano, on a programming ranging from Charlie Parker to Ornette Coleman.
