Gwyneth Herbert in Mojo

Having wrested her career from soft-focus supper club jazz, Herbert has set off down a quirkier, singer-songwriterly path. Initially planned as an EP, the key song on this mini-LP is Perfect fit, a delightful slice of pop whimsy, complete with ukulele and swanny whistle, that will surely end up wafting over the credits for Richard Curtis Brit-com. Elsewhere, imaginative remixes of older Herbert tunes actually improve on the originals, adding edge and mystery. My Narrow Man resurfaces wrapped in spooky electronica, and So Worn Out is sped up and taken to the dancefloor. It all closes with the a cappella emotion of Midnight Oil. Only three stars as three versions of Perfect Fit smacks of indecision but this is far superior to the usual odds'n'sods release and, despite the naff title, the 32-minute set is the best resume yet of Herbert's solo talents.
