Seize The Time in Os Place

12 November 2009
O's Place Jazz Magazine
D. Oscar Groomes

O's Notes: Drummer Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls are Jake Vinsel (b), Geof Bradfield (ts, b-cl), Greg Ward (as) and Dave Miller (g). They have been making funky, neobop music since 1995. The calypso beats of "13 De Maio" feel good, as does the reggae of "Killa Dilla". They swing on "Free Cell Block F, 'Tis Nazi USA". "Tollway" is anchored by Vinsel's walking bass with Bradfield reading the lead lines on bass clarinet. The effect is an eerie blues that is captivating. Ted adds an improvised drum solo for "Viva Max!" before they get into some funk on "Polo Mze Pt. 2". Siriota and company get you patting your feet and will keep you pulsing even after the music stops!
