Gwyneth Herbert is the beautiful Ghost of British Jazz-Pop Yet to Come. Her new album, All the Ghosts, defies all attempts at classification, hiding the traits which might have likened her to other artists with such a diverse album. Fiona Apple and her band are here. Regina Spektor is surely one of the ghosts haunting this album. Nina Simone may have pushed the piano chords but the surprisingly soulful voice is most certainly her own.

The content of Herbert's music is charming. Even the most banal situations and encounters can be transcribed into emotive and enlightening pieces of music. Inviting listeners to sit in the passenger seat of her car, ‘My Mini and Me' is a striking, near bluegrass anthem for anyone who has ever longed to escape. Another, ‘Jane Into a Beauty Queen', playfully pastiches the melodies which the album's other songs labour to establish.  No two of these many textured songs overlap in style or content, capturing a remarkable impression of a very specific point in a young woman's life.
