The Guardian 5* review for trioVD - X

The Leeds-based, avant-funk threesome trioVD (former Acoustic Ladyland guitarist Chris Sharkey, saxophonist Christophe de Bézenac and drummer Chris Bussey) like keeping things tight - their 2009 Fill It Up With Ghosts album ran to barely more than 40 minutes. But, at the speed with which they unleash their incendiary mix of splattery, blustering atonal sax themes and road-crash guitar chords, or the intensity with which they unfold Ornette Coleman-like jazz laments, it felt like a couple of albums' worth of music. This scorching EP is a similar tour de force, representing the group's inimitable reflections on The X Factor through just four tracks - tangentially (and dementedly) related to Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Kelly Rowland. Tulisa kicks in sounding like a blend of the Martians' quacking imprecations from Mars Attacks! and the troop-training from Full Metal Jacket (the structure was simply based on her seven-syllable name). Walsh is an atonally bagpipey alto-sax take on a cheesy ballad; Barlow begins as a fast-blipping theme against shouts and stormy percussion and then turns into a furious clamour, like seabirds on amphetamines; and Kelly is a raw alto squall against a brooding backbeat. It's immensely exhilarating, and avant-rock and free-jazz listeners will cheer it equally.
