Future Sons & Daughters in Metro

14 October 2010
Metro
Arwa Haider

Having been raised in New Orleans, singer/songwriter AM had masses of musical traditions on his doorstep but his material weaves in influences from all over the world. AM's easygoing inventiveness makes for a tropical-flavoured smoothie, including pan-Latin rhythms, high-pitched soul crooning, psych grooves, filmic atmospheres and rumbling dub effects, all of which he breezily sums up as ‘indie lounge pop'. He has also put together a free online mixtape to offer a taster of his inspirations (www.bit.ly/Ammixtape) which makes a delectable aperertiff for his own imminent album, Future Sons & Daughters. The LP suggests that AM is a close relative of Beck andtropicalia legend Caetano Veloso (with whom he's previously performed). It's also elegantly produced by Charles Newman (best known for his work with Magnetic Fields). He heads out on a British tour next week.
